Mona Hodgson is the author of thirty books for children. She also writes adult historical novels. Her most popular of these novels are her Sisters of Cripple Creek series which started with the novel, Two Brides too Many (Waterbrook Multnomah, 2010), Her latest book in the Sister of Cripple Creek series is Too Rich for a Bride.

Plot of Too Rich for a Bride

Ida Sinclair has come to Cripple Creek to work for Mollie O'Bryan, a successful businesswoman. Ida has no interest in romance instead wishing to make lots of money to help her family.

Ida attracts the attention of two men in Cripple Creek. The first is Colin Wagner, a lawyer. Colin wishes to have Ida help him make lots of money as well. The second is Tucker Raines, a poor traveling pastor. Tucker has interest in Ida's soul a s well as her life.

Ida learns about the stockmarket from Mollie. She quickly learns to play the market to make money for herself and her family. She feels successful despite her sisters and brothers-in-law questions about the ethics of Mollie O'Bryan.

Fate and the Lord step in and lead Ida where they want her to go. She learns of the double life of Colin Wagner and Tucker Raines gets an unexpected job. Ida must now choose the right direction for her life.

Characters of Too Rich for a Bride

The characters portrayed in this book are realistic and believable. Ida shows the strength necessary for most women of the era. She desires happiness, but doesn't necessarily need a man to make her happy. Colin and Tucker both have their redeeming qualities. It becomes apparent to the reader that Ida will have a lasting romance with one of these men. The supporting characters provide a color that would be usual for a town of the era.

Uses of Too Rich for a Bride

This book would be an enjoyable addition to the reading list of a ladies group. Readers are provided with a discussion guide which provides questions to answer to further delve into the story and characters.

It is a fun follow-up to the previous novel about the Sinclair Sisters. It could be read alone or as a followup. Readers will eagerly await the novel about the final Sinclair Sister which the author is currently working on.

This book is a fun read which provides not only entertainment but a glimpse into the lives of men and women in historical Colorado. The novel includes mention of historical people and places.
