Campout Snacks Even Kids Can Make

Camping in the fresh air makes everyone hungry. Try these simple recipes for good campout snacks.

One of the best parts of camping is cooking over an open fire. The food just seems to taste better in the fresh air. Here's some good foods for campouts.

Camp Biscuit Dough

This dough mix should be made ahead and put into baggies for use during the campout. It has many uses once made.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup margarine
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3 tablespoons buttermilk powder
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 cup water

Procedure

  1. Mix dry ingredients together.
  2. Grate in the margarine, mixing until coarse crumbs form.
  3. Store in a baggie with "add 3/4 cup water" written on the outside.
  4. When ready to use, add the water and stir until dough forms. (makes about 2-1/2 cups of dough)
  5. Use in one of the following recipes

Puppies in Blankets

Ingredients (per puppy)

  • 1 hot dog
  • 1 slice American Cheese (if desired)
  • 1 handful of Camp Biscuit Dough
  • 1 green stick with the bark removed or hot dog fork

Procedure

  1. Put hot dog on stick and warm slightly over the fire.
  2. If desired, wrap slice of American cheese around the hot dog.
  3. Flatten dough into a flat rectangle and wrap around the hot dog.
  4. Put over fire, turning on a regular basis until the dough is cooked through.
  5. Enjoy with your favorite condiments.

Camp Snakes on a Stick

Materials

  • green stick with the bark removed
  • handful of Camp Biscuit dough

Procedure

  1. Heat end of stick briefly over a fire.
  2. Roll dough into a long thin snake shape.
  3. Carefully twist around warm end of stick, pinching the ends so the snake doesn't fall off
  4. Cook over the fire until brown and snake is cooked through.
  5. Enjoy.

S'mores

These are probably the most popular kind of camping treat. They are so good they will leave the eater asking for more.

Ingredients (for each s'more)

  • 2 large marshmallows
  • 1 complete graham cracker
  • 1/3 of a chocolate bar
  • Green stick with the bark removed or hot dog fork

Procedure

  1. Put marshmallows on the stick
  2. Roast over fire to desired color. Roasted marshmallows vary in color from golden brown to black
  3. Break graham cracker in half and place chocolate on one half.
  4. Use the other half of graham cracker to push marshmallows off of stick and onto the chocolate.
  5. Enjoy

Banana Boats

Ingredients for two boats

  • 2 bananas
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup mini marshmallows

Procedure

  1. Peel back one section of the peeling. A knife may be used to slit it to make it easier.
  2. Scoop out a little of the banana.
  3. Fill the space with half the chocolate chips and mini marshmallows.
  4. Put peeling back over banana and fillings and wrap in foil.
  5. Repeat for second banana.
  6. Place in coals for 5 minutes.
  7. Remove from heat carefully.
  8. Enjoy with a spoon.

Cake Baked in an Orange

Ingredients

  • Yellow or white cake mix prepared according to the box instructions
  • 10 to 12 oranges

Procedure

  1. Cut the top third off the oranges
  2. Remove the pulp from the bottom 2/3 of the orange.
  3. Fill the bottom with cake mix.
  4. Put the top back on.
  5. Wrap in aluminum foil.
  6. Repeat for remaining oranges.
  7. Bake in the coals of a campfire for 10 to 15 minutes.
  8. Unwrap carefully and enjoy.

Campfire cooking can be done without too many utensils with some surprisingly tasty results.
